– Former Spanish Colony of Florida, our year of the Queen ’06 –
The boy sat in his room, a gaslamp burning in the corner, its soft glow illuminating a room at a boarding school. He was homesick of a sort, and lonely. Long brown hair flowed over the back of a sharp dinner jacket with a hue of burgundy trimmed in gold. Fidgeting, the boy turned to the box that sat atop his writing desk and with a few sharp turns of the crankshaft that powered the generator, the threw the switch that turned the box on.
A hum began as the glass lit up on the box, revealing a picture of a stylized writing page, the top of which was labeled, “MySpace.” Squinting against the light, the boy began to manipulate the control mechanisms, scanning through pages, looking for a new friend nearby; he was tired of being in this colony with no one to call friend.
He stumbled across her quite by accident. She had up a daguerreotype in crisp sepia tones, although her posture was quite standoffish. He read the lettering that accompanied the image, which clearly brooked no disturbance of her peace. No stranger should use this avenue to contact her.
He read further out of curiosity and found that they shared a great many things in common. Their tastes converged in orchestra and literature as well as the new-fangled moving pictures that even had sound. He found that the more he read, the more intrigued he became, until he had no choice but to take out a sheet of vellum and compose a rather long missive, a treatise in fact, detailing exactly why she should allow him to make her acquaintance.
Several days later he received a response: They would share a meal at the boarding school, which she also attended. From that very first meeting, their friendship grew quickly. They shared many a meal and cinema together, but always as friends. Until one fateful night, when he plucked up the courage and motive to snare her with a kiss. Her reciprocation filled him with such happiness. Soon, wonderful things were on the horizon.
During their time at university, they made arrangements to go on the Grand Tour together, seeing such wonderful sights as the home of the empire, Spain herself, as well as her charming sister, France. And when they had both finished their degrees, they purchased a flat in one of the original colonies, North Carolina, far from either of their birthplaces. They meant to strike out on their own and see what life they might build for themselves.
The country was in a difficult time and they faced many hardships, yet through it all the girl remained a steadfast companion and the boy resolute in his care for her. They never found themselves cross with each other during their plight, but instead fashioned every trial into a cooperative effort, pitting the two of them against the circumstances of fate. In the end, they prevailed, for they had the strength and support of the other.
After gaining new friends and sharing wonderful years together, they began to discuss joining in matrimony. Either one of them would be hard pressed to tell you which asked the other first, but it came to be that they knew they wanted to be wed together. They set about to tell their family and friends the joyous news. Many of their loved ones were overjoyed and volunteered to help with the ceremony as they could.
Along the way, the boy and girl found they fancied attending certain masquerade balls whereby attendees would dress most fancifully and adopt the airs from a much earlier time. They would wear gowns and corsets and top hats and goggles, adopting the persona of anything their hearts desired; airship pirates mingled with wastelanders, members of the Queen’s own military exchanged stories with explorers, fabulous inventors displayed their dalliances in the newest of steam-powered gadgetry, while alchemists poured drinks for lords and ladies in their frocks and dresses.
The pair wanted to share this wonderful aspect of their relationship together with their family so that they might commemorate the bonds of marriage with a memorable and unique ceremony. And so they ask you to RSVP if you are able to attend a service in glorified steampunk tradition on October the 19th in our year of the Queen, ’13, somewhere in the mountains of the new state of West Virginia, and if you’re so inclined, to join in the festivities with your own steampunk regalia, along with compass, top hat, or goggles. Many examples can be found on the steampunk page.
They are appreciative of your attendance even if you choose not to participate in the masquerade. Please be sure to RSVP so that they may send you a formal invitation by pony express.
